As an entertainment district, St. Pauli is home to a multitude of music clubs, pubs and discotheques of different styles and quality, which are destinations for local residents and tourists every weekend. But the historical background of the Reeperbahn is quite different. From around 1630 onwards, rope makers and rope makers outsourced their craft to the suburb of Hamburger Berg. The old railways at Eichholz, not far from today's Landungsbrücken, had become too small. Because an important basic requirement for their work were long tracks on which the up to 300 meter long ropes or cords were made manually. This activity gave the Reeperbahn, which was laid out around 1820/30, its later name - initially it was known as Altonaer Allee. The manufactured ropes, which were mainly used for use on ships, were made throughout the district - this is evidenced, for example, by the Seilerstraße, which runs parallel to the Reeperbahn.
