The tower's name derives from a 17th-century love story. The then Swedish king, former Prince Friedrich von Hessen-Cassel, gave his mistress, one of his wife's maids-in-waiting, the East Holstein estates of Panker, Klampp, Schmoel and Hohenfelde as a financial security. In 1868, King Wilhelm I gave these four Hessenstein estates the designation "Herrschaft Hessenstein".
Today the lookout tower is a popular destination. Climbing the 17 meter high tower with its 111 steps is rewarded with a great view: when the weather is nice and the view is clear, the panoramic view extends from the Bungsberg to the cranes of the Kiel shipyards, to Fehmarn and even across the Baltic Sea to the Danish ones islands.

The octagonal tower is a listed monument and was renovated in 1983. Since then, the colored stained glass windows have shone in new splendour. On sunny days, the landscape appears in the brightest colors through these windows. A special treat is this play of colors at sunset.

From the viewing platform you can look over the Baltic Sea to Fehmarn, in clear weather even to Denmark. In the immediate vicinity is the Gutsdorf Panker with the castle Panker, the small chapel, the Trakehner breed and the historic inn "Ole Liese". Admission 1 Euro.
