Ernst Heinrich Philipp August Haeckel (born February 16, 1834 in Potsdam; † August 9, 1919 in Jena) was a German physician, zoologist, philosopher, draftsman and free thinker as well as a university professor in Jena, who followed the ideas of Charles Darwin from the 1860s a special theory of descent. Through his popular writings and lectures, he contributed greatly to the spread of Darwinism in Germany, which, unlike his teacher Rudolf Virchow and his opponent Emil Heinrich Du Bois-Reymond, he wanted to see integrated into school lessons. In addition, he developed a detailed embryological argument for the theory of evolution and in this context formulated the basic biogenetic law.

A popular and well-known place in the Jena Forest.
You can get there easily from the forester's house or Schottplatz and have a view of the new buildings and forest.
Named after Ernst Heackel Stein. This was erected in honor of the 50th anniversary of his death by the city of Jena in GDR times.
