The fortified castle of Bouillon, the oldest feudal castle in Belgium!
Visit one of Belgium's fortified castles and embark on a journey through more than 1,000 years of history!
The fortified castle of Bouillon, perched on three rocky peaks overlooking the Semois River and the surrounding area, with its labyrinthine corridors and vast vaulted chambers, is considered the first and most interesting vestige of feudalism in Belgium.
The origins of the first fortifications date back to the 8th century.
It was immortalized by Godefroid, leader of the First Crusade (1096), and confessed to the Holy Sepulchre, who linked the castle to the Archbishopric of Liège to finance his expedition to the Holy Land.
Finally, during the Wars of Louis XIV, it underwent major development work by Vauban and was militarily occupied until 1830.
