Set deep amidst Assynt's remarkable knock and lochan landscape, Suileag is a haven in one of Scotland's wildest places. The main draw is, of course, Suilven, perhaps Britain's most visually stunning mountain. It's iconic ridge is easily accessible from the bothy. Often overlooked in favour of its more exhibitionist neighbour, Canisp is also a fantastic objective to the east.

The bothy is 2.5 miles (4 km) from Lochinver and accessed by a good path. There's room enough for eight people to sleep in two separate rooms, each with their own hearth. Bear in mind that outside of the summer months it can be rather chilly. The bothy is owned by the Assynt Foundation, who work to preserve the magnificent surrounding landscape.

This route is a long hike that you can break down in to two days by hiking to the bothy and staying there for the night. The second day is all about ascending Suilven.

Bothies are free to stay in and only have the basics of a roof over your head, a platform to sleep on and a fire place for those of you who feel like carrying some wood up with you to make it a more cosier night.

All that is asked of you is the following:

1. Keep the bothy tidy.
2. Whatever you take to the bothie with you, take home (rubbish etc.)
3. Respect the bothy.
4. Respect other bothy users - you aren't always guaranteed to be on your own!
5. The bothy is for everyone.
6. Share your stories and adventures with other adventurers (haha).
7. Don't ruin places like this for others.

We popped our heads into the bothy on our 'Sutherland Trail' walk in April 2023. It was in great condition, very tidy. The both has plenty of fixed bunks and floor space for those wishing to split their Suilven hike into 2 days. We didn't stay on this occasion (favouring a wild camp on the mountain itself due to the low wind) but this would have been a great refuge had we not been blessed with such a good weather forecast.
