The Pfalzgrafenstein Castle, also called the Palatinate near Kaub, was built as a customs castle in the Rhine near Kaub by Ludwig the Bavarian, the Count Palatine of the Rhine and later Roman-German king and emperor. Its task was to monitor the collection of shipping customs at the paying office on the right bank of the Rhine in Kaub. Because of this purpose, the island castle - unlike other castles on the Middle Rhine - was never used for residential purposes. The building was built over the years from a tower built by Ludwig the Bavarian between 1326 and 1327.
