The plastic statue, made by the Antwerp artist Mariette Coppens (°1931-2021), has been here since 1993. "The Dijkgravin" is the main character from the novel of the same name by Marie Gevers.
It tells the story of an energetic and independent girl who, after the death of her father, takes over his position as dike manager in the Scheldt region near Temse, against all prejudices. In terms of love, she must choose between a boy of lower descent to whom she is physically attracted and a young man of her own class who appeals to her both emotionally and intellectually. Or is her true love the Scheldt, with whom she tests her strength during a spring tide that resembles a mythical mating ritual? The Dike Countess is a long ode to that river, which provides work for the local residents and which takes on a different shape in every season.
