Between the 13th and 16th centuries, three small churches built next to each other were built on a small forest clearing with a wonderful panoramic view on the site of an ancient pagan spring sanctuary, but each of them is independent. The origin of this district of Barbian is still obscure today.

The churches are dedicated to St. Gertrude, St. Nicholas and St. Magdalena. The St. Gertraud Church was first mentioned in a document in 1237 and is therefore probably the oldest of the three churches. The unique wooden shingle roof connecting the three churches is impressive.

A look inside is definitely worthwhile: Gothic winged altars and rich frescoes from the late medieval Brixen school surprise the visitor.

The hamlet of Bad Dreikirchen arose around three Gothic chapels built close together at an altitude of 1120 m and belongs to the municipality of Barbian in the Eisacktal (South Tyrol). Dreikirchen can only be reached on foot or via forest roads that are closed to public traffic. It used to be a classic summer resort, today Dreikirchen is a popular hiking destination with several buildings and inns that are around 100 years old in addition to the three churches.
