We are in the land of the old Principality of Liège. The municipality of the Ardennes department was incorporated into the province of Namur in 1815.

This village was called the "village of the widows" because the men worked there in the slate quarries, the dust of which causes the same disease as that of the miner, silicosis.

The Church of Oignies is a neo-Romanesque church, dedicated to Saint Barthélemy. Consecrated in 1861, it is one of the two Catholic churches in the village. You can admire its architecture and history, as well as the Cathedral of Light, a glass sculpture that marks the geographic center of the 15-country European Union. The church is surrounded by nature trails that offer a variety of scenery and wildlife. You can also explore the neighboring villages of Viroinval and Olloy-sur-Viroin, which have their own historical and cultural attractions.
