The Harbke Castle Park with the adjacent castle ruins are the landmark and center of the former border town of Harbke. The medieval castle had been owned by the Veltheim family since the early 14th century and was redesigned as a baroque complex in the 18th century. Friedrich August von Veltheim also had a pleasure garden created in 1740, which was then converted into a landscape park in 1760.

Friedrich August dedicated himself intensively to the cultivation and cultivation of foreign plants and so Harbke soon gained a reputation for breeding such flora far beyond the country's borders. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe even visited Harbke to study “wild tree breeding”. Harbke also supplied countries such as Denmark, Russia and Poland with plants for their own parks. Even today, visitors can still discover many rare trees and plants from the 18th century in the park.
