The castle, which stands on a spur-like hill east of the Saale, has cellars that were suitable for a case of defense. In addition, the castle is surrounded by gardens and parks. It is assumed that it used to be a fortified mansion of the von Tümpling family, which appears several times in Jena documents from the 14th century.
The associated manor was expropriated in 1945 and distributed to resettlers in accordance with the land reform laws.
In 1993 the castle was acquired by descendants of the Tümplings and the reconstruction began immediately.
