This church is a gem. I came back especially to see it from the inside. Remarkable.

A religious settlement of Scots was founded in Waulsort around 945 and grew into a Benedictine monastery. After 969, properties in Hastière-par-delà were also subordinated to this monastery, where a former nunnery gradually grew into an independent monastery. From 1033 onwards there were disputes and rivalries between Waulsort and Hastière, which both belonged to the sphere of influence of the diocese of Metz. With Wibald von Stablo or later Bishop Bertram von Metz, Waulsort had powerful advocates and proved to be more adept at forging documents; Nevertheless, Hastière ultimately achieved equality: At the beginning of the 13th century, Hastière and Waulsort were each headed by a prior and a common abbot. In 1227 the monasteries were placed under the diocese of Liège. Both abbeys were looted and set on fire in 1793; What remains are the abbey church of Hastière and the abbey courtyard of Waulsort, now a private residence.

This abbey church in d'Hastiere was dedicated to Saint Peter (Saint Pierre). Simon, nicknamed Peter (Rock), was a fisherman on Lake Genesareth when he - together with his brother Andrew - was called by Jesus Christ to be a "fisher of men". According to Catholic understanding, he is the highest apostle, and the two thousand year long line of popes - currently Francis - are his successors. In statues and paintings, Peter is almost always depicted with two keys in his hand; this attribute refers to the Bible verse in Matthew: "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." (Chapter 16, Verse 19).
Peter is also known together with Paul as the "prince of the apostles"; their common feast day in the calendar of saints is June 29th.
