They still exist. The old ferries with a ferryman, hand-operated, classic, drifting and steering. And here on the steel cable! Very exciting. For a fee. Tradition. Here. I had a little chat with the passengers.

As early as the Middle Ages, the monks of Waulsort Abbey operated a ferry across from the old abbey, not far from the current site. At the beginning of the 19th century, there were about 10 ferries between the French border and Namur. The Waulsort ferry is the last one still operating on the Meuse.
From 1871, after the construction of the railway line between Dinant and Givet on the left bank (opened in 1863), residents of the villages of Falmagne and Falmignoul could reach the other bank via this ferry and take the train to Dinant. The ferry operated in the summer (using an underwater cable) and in the winter (an aerial cable). It is therefore part of Waulsort's heritage.
The boat used by our ancestors was the gondola (a term dating back to the 13th century). It was made of wood, 12-13 meters long, 1.50 meters wide, and 0.70 meters deep. Both ends were raised, making it easier to load and unload both people and goods from the bank. The boat was steered manually with a râble, a pole with a round plank on the end.
Nowadays, the gondola has been replaced by a regular "box," and the skipper uses a "shoe" and an underwater cable to steer the boat.
