The Schwerin old town around the cathedral is the old core of the city. However, the shopping and promenade. The more of the houses of the 19th century are stamped.

The wooden city fortification was only replaced from the 14th century by a wall, which did not include the parallel to the old town developing Schelfe north of Schwerin. Later, a new entrance through the blacksmith's gate and the blacksmith's street was created. The city fortification was further expanded until the end of the 18th century using water resources and gradually tore down again with the expansion of the residential development. Remains of the city wall are preserved to this day in the Burgstraße.

During fires in the years 1531, 1558 and 1561, large parts of the old-town buildings were destroyed. With the exception of the Schwerin Cathedral, the Domhof and some parts of the castle, no buildings have survived until the 17th century. The old town is marked by the historicism of the 19th century. Due to relocation of the ducal residence from Ludwigslust to Schwerin in 1837, building activity resumed alongside the economy. Under the influence of Georg Adolph Demmler, who was appointed court architect in 1841, representative buildings and the reconstructed Schwerin Castle were erected.

Since 1968, new residential buildings in slab construction on the Great Moor in the Old Town, after old, neglected buildings were demolished there and heaped up on Burgsee. The monotonous appearance of the prefabricated buildings was only loosened up by maintaining historic street layouts, partly clinker cladding of the facades and the bevel of the roofs. It was not until the 1980s that occasionally half-timbered buildings were renovated.
