In the year 961 the "civitas Ilburg" was mentioned in a document of Otto I. for the first time. With Frederick I von Wettin began the rule of the Wettin over town and country. The castle Eilenburg is considered the cradle of Saxony, since with the investiture of Henry I of Eilenburg with the Mark Meissen in 1089, the Saxon territorial state was founded.
