The Egeneich (around 1430, named after the Egentor) reminds that fortifications were additionally reinforced with watercourses and pond systems.
The Eggenburg fortification was additionally supported in the north, east and west with the addition of ponds so that the defense could concentrate on the intermediate strips.
A total of 10 ponds surrounded the city wall, see

At the beginning of 2024, the city pond was strictly cleared of "greenery". Trees and hedges were removed. However, there is a good reason for this: they want to prevent the roots from damaging the dam and, in the worst case, even causing a dam break.
Despite the "clear-cutting", the pond is a beautiful leisure oasis in Eggenburg.
