Johann Wilhelm II. (18th Elector of the Palatinate, popularly: "Jan Wellem") ruled as Duke of Jülich and Berg from 1679 to 1716. In autumn, the Elector went hunting in the Königsforst. Jan Wellem's second wife Anna Maria Luisa de Medici raved about the view of the old Bensberg Castle over the hilly surroundings, which reminded her of her homeland, Tuscany.

Probably for the sake of his wife, Jan Wellem had the new hunting lodge built in baroque style from 1703 to 1711. More on this: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schloss_Bensberg

Anyone who is out and about in Bensberg should not miss the Bensberg Castle. The hunting lodge from the early 18th century sits loftily on a hill above the city. In 1997 the castle was extensively restored and transformed into a grand hotel with 5 stars. The facility can be viewed publicly, for example, as part of the annual Christmas market.
