      The Osterburken Roman Fort is an important Roman military camp and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes. It was built around 160 AD as a cohort fort and later expanded with an annex fort. The fort served to secure and monitor the Roman border and housed units such as the Cohors III Aquitanorum equitata.

        The Osterburken fort is located on the Upper German-Rhaetian Limes. It was built mainly to secure and monitor the Limes and housed a cohort (approx. 500 men).
        The cohort fort had an area of 186x115 m (2.15 ha) and was built around 160 AD. built. Under Emperor Commodus (reign 180-192 AD) it was extended to include an annex fort with an area of 1.35 hectares. Thus the fort became a double fort (cohort + numerus fort) with a crew of around 650 men.
        The units were: Cohors III Aquitanorum equitata civium Romanorum
        and Numerus Brittonum Elantiensium.
        The double fort existed until 259/260 AD (Limesfall).
        The exposed walls in Osterburken come from the annex fort. The larger cohort fort is no longer visible except for the SE defensive wall.
