"... Around the time of the 11th century, the Sylvester chapel was built. The building, which was first mentioned in a document in 1397, experienced an eventful history. After it was first expanded in 1464 to become a branch church of the Catholic main parish of Bochum, it changed in the course of the Lutheran Reformation a Protestant church. Unfortunately, the manor house and Sylvester chapel were destroyed down to the outer walls by an air raid in May 1943. ..."

The Sylvester chapel is the former catholic house chapel of the mansion Haus Weitmar in the district of the same name in Bochum. It is located in the northwestern area of the Weitmar Castle Park. During the Reformation, there was a change of denomination to the Evangelical Lutheran faith, and until the completion of Bochum's Matthäuskirche in 1868, the chapel served as a church for the Lutheran congregation. During the Second World War, the small church, which had meanwhile fallen into disrepair, was hit by bombs, as was the neighboring house Weitmar, so that today it is only a ruin. This was placed on April 26, 1995 as a monument under monument protection.
