Sontra, the old "mountain and Hänselstadt", was situated on Thuringian soil for a long time and has a turbulent borderland history behind it. Some parts of the city, which today has a population of almost 9,000, date back to the 8th and 9th centuries with the first mention of the city. For this reason, the old mountain and Hänselstadt celebrated its 1200th anniversary in 1976.

In 2016, the market square of the mountain and Hansel town in Sontra was redesigned. The market square is right in front of the Sontra town hall (rebuilt in 1668) and is used for numerous events (markets, maypole festival, etc.). The half-timbered buildings that surround the market square are also interesting. The mining museum is located below the town hall. The figure of the Iron Buddy stands in front of the museum on the market square. Whoever touches his left hand should always be in work and bread in the future.
