The Domplatz, with its approximately 3.5 hectares of space and the cathedral, is arguably Erfurt's most striking landmark. Weekly markets, Christmas markets, the Domstufenfestspiele (Cathedral Stage Festival), open-air concerts, and other events take place here, right in the center of Erfurt. The buildings surrounding the Domplatz are worth seeing, and there are numerous restaurants and eateries.

A 70-step outside staircase leads from Domplatz to Domberg. The cathedral with its highly Gothic choir, Romanesque tower area and late Gothic west hall is the successor to the 724 religious building in Rome. He was the main church of the bishopric of Erfurt, founded by Bishop Boniface. In the middle tower is the world's largest medieval free-swinging bell, the Gloriosa.

The panorama with the cathedral is unique. Somehow I remembered the stones darker. There must have been a major restoration. Unfortunately, the cathedral was not open (time of the Christmas market and in the evening). A new passage had been discovered shortly before our visit many years ago. I would be interested to know what happened to it ... Why we never made it back to the cathedral, even though we were in the area extremely often (even BEFORE the cathedral), is in retrospect absolutely incomprehensible!

The cathedral square in Erfurt is a large market square with around 3.5 hectares, with intact or restored peripheral buildings. It was once the main market square and court square. On the square are the Minerva Fountain (1784) and the Erthal Obelisk erected in 1777 in honor of the Elector of Mainz.

Since the 1920s there have been repeated plans to rebuild the northern cathedral square and thus reduce it to its historical size. They weren't realised.

As part of the socialist urban development in all major cities of the GDR, a high-rise building with many other buildings, a monument and a huge staircase down to the cathedral square was to be built on the neighboring Petersberg. The change of power from Walter Ulbricht to Erich Honecker with a change in the focus of building activity in the GDR prevented the realization of the project. In the 1970s there were plans to build a cultural center on the square. In addition, the end of the Juri-Gagarin-Ring over the Domplatz and through the Andreasviertel was also planned in GDR times. There was resistance to this project from the Erfurt population as early as 1987, but it failed as a result of the Peaceful Revolution in 1989.

At the end of the 1980s, the cathedral square was to become Ernst Thälmann-Platz with a large monument to dialectics depicting the history of the labor movement on the northwestern part of the square. An artist's model already existed, the eight flagpoles are still standing today (2019). The latter plans were also prevented by the political change in 1990.

Erfurt has a beautiful old town, the Domplatz is one of the most beautiful squares in Germany for me. And you have to have seen it in the evening in the blue hour. Also visit the Christmas market in front of and behind the cathedral (but not on weekends, when you can hardly walk). Nuremberg can hide there ;-)
And not to forget the Krämerbrücke, the ega and ...

As early as 1293, the cathedral square was mentioned as "ante gradus". Since 1945 it has been called "Cathedral Square". It is the largest square in the city.
A market or trading place is said to have existed here since the 8th century. Numerous markets and events still take place on the cathedral square. In the vernacular, the square is and was also called "Gradenmarkt" or "before the Graden". This refers to the wide staircase leading to the cathedral and Severikirche, the "Graden" (gradus - Latin for step). The unique ensemble of the two churches and the wide 70-step staircase up the Domberg provides the breathtaking backdrop for the "Cathedral Steps Festival", which has meanwhile become famous throughout Germany. An eye-catcher on the square is the obelisk erected in 1777 to commemorate the Archbishop of Mainz, Friedrich Karl von Erthal, and the Minerva fountain from 1784. The square has only had its current size since 1813. At that time, the buildings in front of the Severikirche had been destroyed by battles between Prussian, Russian, Austrian and French troops.

The largest Christmas market in the city is on the Domplatz in front of the illuminated Erfurt Cathedral and the Severikirche.
The inspiring exhibition "Floral at Christmas" can be combined with a visit. The beautiful exhibition of florists is located in the vaults of the rock cellar on Domberg (admission fee 4 euros).
