The Domplatz, with its approximately 3.5 hectares of space and the cathedral, is arguably Erfurt's most striking landmark. Weekly markets, Christmas markets, the Domstufenfestspiele (Cathedral Stage Festival), open-air concerts, and other events take place here, right in the center of Erfurt. The buildings surrounding the Domplatz are worth seeing, and there are numerous restaurants and eateries.

A 70-step outside staircase leads from Domplatz to Domberg. The cathedral with its highly Gothic choir, Romanesque tower area and late Gothic west hall is the successor to the 724 religious building in Rome. He was the main church of the bishopric of Erfurt, founded by Bishop Boniface. In the middle tower is the world's largest medieval free-swinging bell, the Gloriosa.
