Hardly any other fountain house has been looked after as well as the Popperöder fountain house in the centuries after its construction. After there had been a fountain festival in Mühlhausen since the beginning of the 17th century, the source of the Poppenröder Bach was framed and the adjoining house was built. A place that is still absolutely magical today.

The Popperode spring itself is nothing special. But the Popperode fountain house is a real eye-catcher. Together with the spring, it creates a great ensemble. The way the fountain house presents itself to the street is somewhat reminiscent of a stage.
There are a few events a year, such as the fountain festival and the acoustic evening. Of course, you can also get fresh water directly from the spring.

The Popperöder Brunnenhaus is an important architectural and cultural monument of the city of Mühlhausen in Thuringia. The entire system consists of the well socket of the Popperöder spring, the well house and an enclosure. In addition, there are other springs in the vicinity of the facility (Grundsloch and Brunnen V), which are still used today for the city's water supply.
In the well house there is a board with the hydrological data of the spring. The daily discharge is around 3,500 cubic meters of drinking water (40.5 l / s). The water temperature fluctuates between 11 and 16 degrees Celsius. In the 3.8 m deep Popperöder spring there is also a constant occurrence of the common fir-frond (Hippuris vulgaris), a rare and endangered fir-frond plant in Thuringia. (... from Wiki)

The Popperöder spring was probably created in 1199 by a sinkhole. It ran several mills and supplied the old town with water. To this day, the people of Mühlhausen gratefully go to the spring at the fountain festival. In 1614, Mayor Fleischhauer had the fountain house built with a massive basement and a half-timbered upper floor with corner towers and gable. The spring itself was framed in a semicircle like an amphitheater with the fountain house as a stage. This created one of the most beautiful springs in Thuringia.
