Imposing fortress of the Free Imperial City of Nuremberg against the Margraves of Ansbach. Mighty ramparts with corner towers at all five corners. A branch of the Bavarian State Archives is located in the palace building. Visiting the interesting outside area of the fortress is possible at any time.
Visiting times from April to October.
The fortress Lichtenau is a perfect example of a Renaissance fortress, even if the plant was already strategically outdated at the time of its completion. Through her valley she was difficult to defend and fell several times in enemy hands. When Franconia fell to Bavaria around 1800, the fortress was used as a prison for many years. Today, after several years of renovation, there is a branch office of the Nuremberg State Archives. The courtyard and the ramparts are in spite of everything daily to visit.
