White Labs - lower middle class Labs
The Weiße Laber rises in the Aubrunnen south of the village of Voggenthal near Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate. A few steps after the source, an upper reaches about a kilometer long flows from the right, which rises west of the town above the end of the market path in the direction of Höhenberg on the European Watershed. The Weiße Laber flows from there through the Upper Palatinate Jura towards the south. In the upper reaches up to the confluence with the Breitenbrunner Laber it is also called Unterbürger Laber. At Dietfurt it splits and after approx. 44.7 km flows into an oxbow river of the Altmühl.
Because of the surrounding barren landscape, the Weiße Laber is often referred to as the Euphrates of Bavaria. On its way it absorbs numerous smaller tributaries from karst springs. There are bog formations in the valley that began 3000 years ago. A number of endangered animal and plant species exist in the remaining remains of these moors. Part of the valley near Deining is designated as a nature reserve Valley of the White Laaber near Deining and White Laaber near Waltersberg.
The name Laber most likely comes from “labara”, which in the language of the Central European Celts meant something like “the chattering, intoxicating one”. Another origin of the name could also go back to the Bavarian term “lap” (sluggish, slow, lazy), in reference to the slow current of the water.
