Frohnauer blue eyes

The Welfenteich belongs to the blue eyes of Frohnau.
They are unusual, the many small infiltration ponds, Frohnau's “Blue Eyes”, which together with the road layout and the small-scale pavement were the focus of rainwater management when it was founded. 100 years ago, they were laid out ecologically in today's sense and still represent the only possible drainage system for precipitation in Frohnau. However, these infiltration ponds are also ecological habitats for communities, so-called "ecological stepping stones".

The Welfenteich is one of a total of 21 so-called infiltration basins that were used as part of the rainwater disposal for the garden city a good 100 years ago and that were created in natural sinks.

Natural puddles (so-called dead ice holes) were also suitable for this. They still serve as collecting basins for rainwater and as natural infiltration ponds. They are also called "Frohnau Blue Eyes", in which the sky can be reflected - if it is allowed to. The Frohnau ponds have a green frame and are each located in small, more or less well-kept “protected green spaces”.
