In the east of Valkenburg aan de Geul, in the district of "Oud Valkenburg", lies the "Kasteel Schaloen", surrounded by a moat and built of marlstone, which was first mentioned in 1375. In 1381, the castle was owned by the knight Johan Struver van Hulsberg.
The distinctive corner towers of Kasteel Schaloen were added in 1575.
Kasteel Schaloen was conquered by Lodewijk van Nassau in 1574 and a year later, during the Dutch-Spanish War, it was set on fire and badly damaged by Spanish troops. It was not until 1656 that it was rebuilt by Johan Hoen van Cartiels.
Through the gatehouse, which was built at the beginning of the 18th century and now houses a restaurant, you reach the forecourt, which was built around 100 years earlier, with the outbuildings that were formerly used for agricultural purposes and which have since been converted into apartments and rented out to holiday guests.

The complex consists of the castle, the Carriage House, the Tiendgebouw and Gatehouse. Where farmers once paid a tenth of their income to landowners, hotel rooms are now being built. The gatehouse has a brasserie, the castle is private and is inhabited.
