The ruins of the Franciscan monastery Muckross Abbey (also Muckross Friary, Irish Mainistir Locha Léin) from the 15th century are in the middle of the Killarney National Park not far from Lough Leane and Muckross House. It can be reached within a few minutes from the car park and is freely accessible during the park's opening hours.

Muckross Abbey, once called the Franciscan Friary of Irrelagh, dates from the 15th century. The graveyard is still active. As it is easily accessible both from the Kerry Way and a car park on the N71, it can be difficult to visit in the meditative manner best suited to the site. There are still ad sanctos tombs present in the roofless building, and the stairs to the second floor are sturdy, though very slippery on wet days. There is a particularly evocative yew tree in the central courtyard, which is possibly as old as the abbey (building holy sites around yew trees is an ancient tradition in Ireland).
