After around 50 years of intensive use and almost 1400 meetings, the plenary hall area of the state parliament, which was inaugurated in 1962, revealed in some cases worrying functional structural and safety deficits. The distinctive outer facade of the important post-war architect Dieter Oesterlen was protected by historical monuments and copyright, but everyone in the country knew: whether extensive renovation or new construction - the time to act had come. In 2002 there was a first architecture competition, the result of which was not implemented due to cost-cutting measures, in 2010 a new building design for a new architecture competition also won the race among the members of the state parliament, but was rejected again due to considerable construction cost risks, and finally in 2012 the decision was made to convert the existing building. The state parliament met for the last time on July 25, 2014 in its old plenary hall. After three years of renovation work, the state parliament building was reopened on October 27, 2017.
