The Prussian army faced the VII and VIII Corps of the German Confederation. After several skirmishes against the VII Corps, the latter withdrew towards the Odenwald, and the Prussians were able to capture Frankfurt without a fight. The VIII (Bavarian Corps) withdrew to Würzburg, occupying the hills near Rossbrunn. The last battle of the Austro-Prussian War took place at Rossbrunn on July 26, 1866.
