The old Jewish cemetery is still of great importance for Jews worldwide to this day. Numerous influential Jewish scholars and rabbis were buried here. The oldest tombstones date from the year 1058/59 and thus document the first major heyday of the Jewish community in Worms, which can be traced back to around the year 1000. The “Holy Sand” is the oldest Jewish cemetery preserved “in situ” in Europe! Worms, together with Speyer and Mainz, has been one of the SchUM sites on the Rhine since 2021.

Opening times Sunday to Friday 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
Closed on Saturdays and Jewish holidays
Short-term changes/closures are possible at any time; Details according to the notice at the Jewish cemetery or at worms-erleben.de

A visit to the Heiliger Sand cemetery is very impressive!

Unfortunately, the cemetery was closed during my visit because of a holiday. Nevertheless, I could take a look from the forecourt over the gravestones. Very interesting the many historical tombstones. I would like to have looked at these close up too.
