The earliest known wooden chapel at Heiligenborn was built by Miss Walburgis von Hagen zu Büschfeld after the 30-year war. Around 1853 the old chapel was to be rebuilt. The hand and stretching services brought forward for this purpose as well as donations collected from the entire area were not sufficient for a NEW BUILDING. Ms. Céphalie-Thiery (née von Lasalle) from Wallerfang was informed about the new building project for the Lückner chapel and made a donation for the construction. Source: text information board

Since the collected donations were not enough, Céphalie Thiery (née von Lasalle) started the project “New chapel building in Lückner”. She had a new plan drawn up, the building materials manufactured in Wallerfang and transported to the Lückner on horse-drawn carriages. Here the chapel was erected in "assembly kit". Around the same time: In Wallerfang on the Saar, Mrs. Céphalie Thiery (born von Lasalle) had a memorial chapel built for her deceased husband Henry Thiery next to her castle. In 1864 the new construction of this St. Joseph chapel was completed. After the death of Frau Thiery, the palace and memorial chapel went to Ernest Villeroy in 1870. Ernest Villeroy bequeathed this St. Joseph chapel to his uncle Eugen von Boch in Mettlach. The St. Joseph chapel was dismantled in Wallerfang and rebuilt in Mettlach in 1879. The end stone on the front side of the Odilienkapelle in the Lückner bears the year 1861. The neo-Gothic chapel, made of light, smoothly hewn sandstone, forms a rectangle with a three-sided end (internal dimensions 1.9 m wide and 2.85 m long) and has a Stepped gable crowned by a one meter high stone cross. There is a quatrefoil above the profiled pointed arch entrance (width 1.3 m, height 3.7 m). The six corners of the wall are reinforced by 4.6 m high buttresses. Inside since 1946 there has been a 1.15 m tall statue of St. Odilia made of linden wood, which was made in the Beuron art workshop. Source: text information board

A legend tells that blind Odilie, when she washed her eyes with the water of the Heiligenborn in the Großer Lückner, regained her sight. According to another legend, the daughter of a Duke of Lorraine, who was born blind, was given sight at baptism. Her statue is in the chapel. She wears religious habit and abbess staff. Her closed eyes indicate that she was born blind. In her left hand she holds an open book of the Gospels with an eye on each page, a symbol of the miracle working. VITA: Odilie (around 660 to 720) was the blind-born daughter of Duke Adalrich from Alsace. The father wanted to kill his daughter, the mother saved the child and had it raised in the nunnery. When she was baptized by the itinerant bishop Erhard von Regensburg, she received her sight. In 690 she founded her monastery on her father's former high castle to the west of Strasbourg - today's Mount Odile in Alsace. In the year 700, the monastery of Neumünster was founded at a healing spring. Odilie is the patroness of Alsace and the blind. She is invoked for eye diseases as well as ear and head ailments. It was in the Thirty Years' War, in 1634. The Swedish and French troops were retreating to Metz, pursued by the German Imperial Army. Full of anger at their defeat, but also out of hunger, they robbed and plundered all the villages, harassed the people and set their houses on fire. That's how they came to Saarland. The people fled to Heiligenborn with their pastor and prayed for heavenly protection in the chapel. They also took a vow to make a procession here every year if they were saved. They were not discovered by the Swedes, but their hamlet was robbed and burned. Nevertheless, you kept your promise. Source: text information board

At least since the 17th century, every year on Whit Monday (as in Alsace) there has been a procession led by the Wahlen pastor to the chapel of St. Odile and the Heiligenborn. Whit Sunday 1939: The entire interior of the chapel was destroyed by Nazi supporters of the labor service camp (RAD camp) near Ermachen. Pastor Philipp Moog condemned this act on Whit Monday and was then expelled from the parish and the Trier diocese for “constitutional reasons”. During the 2nd World War an ammunition depot of the German Wehrmacht was housed in the Großer Lückner. For this reason, the path to the Odilienkapelle was blocked. In exile, Pastor Moog had a new statue of Odile made, which he set up and consecrated in the chapel on Whit Monday 1946. The pilgrimage is alive again. Source: text information board

The historical background of the legend was the destruction of the village of Ur-Wahlen, which had 23 households in 1563. After the devastation of 1634, by 1638 only two families were left without livestock and any harvest. The place of refuge was the forest area of the Großer Lückner with a strong spring as a place of survival for the population hiding from the soldiers. The few survivors moved into the valley and founded a new settlement, today's Wahlen. Out of gratitude for survival, the place became a place of pilgrimage. Source: text information board

The water of the Heiligenborn, which is located right next to the Odilienkapelle, is famous. Next to the chapel you can see small wooden crosses stuck in the ground. Women ask Saint Odile to fulfill their wish for a child. The Heiligenborn (Odilienwasser) may have promoted this custom: in many religions, the water is the seat of the deceased and those not yet born. Source: text information board
