Battle Chapel, Sempach
The Battle Chapel was probably built in the 14th century by the Habsburgs in memory of Duke Leopold, who died in battle.

It is obvious that the symbolic battle site with the Battle Chapel was used for purposes that went beyond religious services. From the early modern period, the city state of Lucerne celebrated its annual battle anniversary celebrations directly on the battle site. Battle anniversary celebrations that had very different meanings depending on the spirit of the times - sometimes emphatically religious, sometimes strongly patriotic, sometimes predominantly festive and popular. The Battle Anniversary Celebration was never a "pure" memorial service in honor of those who died in battle, even if this aspect of commemorating the dead always played a role in the celebrations. From the Habsburg memorial to the Lucerne sacred building
The construction history of the battle chapel can be divided into seven phases. The first phase describes a predecessor of the current chapel, which, according to tradition, was built one year after the battle on the spot where Duke Leopold fell. In a second phase in 1472/73, the simple memorial was followed by the actual chapel construction. The next phase was a renovation carried out in the middle of the 16th century, during which the prominent battle painting visible today was painted inside the chapel. In a fourth phase in 1638/41, the chapel was structurally redesigned so extensively that it was subsequently called "the new one". Particularly noteworthy here is the notable overhaul of the battle painting by the Lucerne painter Hans Ulrich Wägmann and his circle. During the fifth renovation phase in 1747, the walls were raised by around 50 cm, the windows were raised and the vestibule was added. In 1885/86, during the sixth renovation phase, the current ceiling was added and the battle painting was repainted. In 1985/86, the last renovation to date took place. The existing structure was largely left as it was and only the pointed helmet of the roof turret was replaced with a curved one, a new canopy was added to the side entrance and the seating was widened.
