The boulders set up in long rows have long inspired the imagination of visitors to this mystical place in the middle of the forest. According to popular belief, this should have been a place of worship for Celtic priests (Druids). However, this has not been proven scientifically. But even so it makes fun for young and old to meander through the rocks.

Due to the unusual rock formations and the excited imagination of the visitors, at the end of the 19th / beginning of the 20th century probably this forest area got its name. The popular belief is that it was a place of worship for Celtic priests (the Druids). However, this could not be confirmed from a scientific point of view. In 1989, an investigation was carried out by the Geological Institute of the University of Erlangen. A place of worship could not be confirmed.
The mayor of Wohlmannsgesees came to the conclusion at the end of the 20th century that it was a prehistoric place of worship. However, this could not be conclusively confirmed. since no human traces were found in the Druid grove. Other assumptions made by geologists are that the Druid grove could be a collapsed cave system or a quarry used in the Middle Ages. The assumption of a quarry is also close because the ruins Neideck is not far away.
Whatever this place is, an old quarry, a whim of nature or a place of worship. We will probably never know. Maybe it was used by the Druids because of these special rock formations and the Druids certainly had some fantasy ;-)
This place has its own charisma for every visitor.

Rock labyrinth in a high beech forest. A hundred years ago, the then mayor of the nearby village of Wohlmannsgesees (Georg Richter) made this place known through his thesis that the place now called the Druid Grove would be a prehistoric cult and sun observation site.

Very interesting place. The huge rocks appear to be arranged in a structured manner, creating an impressive, unreal backdrop. Of course, the impression is somewhat spoiled by the fact that when the weather is good it is also a popular adventure playground for families with children. Understandable, but good to know so that you can plan a trip as early as possible if you want to visit the place as undisturbed as possible.
