Stintenburg im Schaalsee: There is hardly a more idyllic place. And none with such a multifaceted history: seat of the North German aristocracy, place of resistance against the Nazis, training center of the Stasi.
A white-tailed eagle circles over the deep blue water, the trees to the left and right of the cobbled avenue cast thick shadows, and once you have crossed the small bridge to the island in the Schaalsee, see the red bridge house on the left and the manor house in the distance in the park, this seems to be the perfect place to forget the troubles of the world.
The poet Gottlieb Klopstock described the island as an "island of happier solitude" in 1767 after a visit in his ode "Stintenburg". Hard to imagine that German history with all its shoals is focused right here on the 400 meter long and maximum 190 meter wide island like in a magnifying glass.
The Stintenburg estate was owned by the Counts of Schwerin in the 13th century. This was followed by Duchess Christine Margarete zu Mecklenburg, the von Lützows, von Bülows and von Hammersteins, until the estate came into the possession of the von Bernstorff family in 1740.
Today's building of the manor house was built in the years 1810 to 1817 on the much older foundations of a previous building that was possibly built in the 14th century.
Sitting with Johann von Bernstorff in the living room of the light-flooded manor house, the view falls across the wide lawn directly onto the Schaalsee. The elders look down from the paintings. Ministers, district presidents, diplomats, artists - the who's who of northern European decision-makers.
