Until the beginning of the last century you could still find extensive heathland in the central part of the protected landscape. Poor sandy soils were grazed and the heather and litter layer were regularly cleared for use in the pot stables. This system maintained the heath for centuries. With the advent of new agricultural techniques and increased afforestation, the heathland was increasingly oppressed. The heather receded into the nooks and crannies of the landscape. Today you can still find valuable relics in the roadsides, around the fens and in the forest complexes. The more than 100 pools, wells and fens that lay in the heath can still be found today in and between the fields and grasslands and in the surrounding forests.
