The Grossfanes hut is one of the most original and simplest huts in the area of the Fanes Alm. Marmots whistle all around the hut and, in addition to donkeys and cows, goats often join the alpine company.
The great location on the Grossfanes Alm on the Dolomitenhöhenweg 1 between Alta Badia and Fanes Sennes Prags ensures plenty of through traffic in the high season. Furthermore, a path leads from the direction of Cortina d'Ampezzo along the Fanesbach and the waterfall to the Hochalm.
Especially in August you should be early or bring a lot of patience when you visit the hut. The hut team is using the simplest means of such a remote hut to fulfill the wishes of the guests. If you are hungry and impatient riding through the region at this time, then I recommend a stop at the Fanes Hütte before or later at the Capanna Alpina on the Dolomitenhöhenweg 1 in the direction of Armentarola (Alta Badia). If you have chosen to exit in the direction of Cortina, you will find several options to stop off after a quick descent in Fiames.
Conclusion: the Grossfanes Hütte is a highlight -- and absolutely recommendable -- the team is very nice and the atmosphere is unbeatable. You should only visit in the off-season or before or after the lunch rush.
