From its source in the Vorarlberg Alps to the mouth of the Danube, the Lech covers more than 250 kilometers. In Austria, the Alpine river winds freely through extensive gravel banks, in Bavaria, however, reservoirs dominate the picture. As one of only a few original biotopes the Litzauer Lech loop has been preserved.
With 24 power plants, the Lech is the most densely built-up river in Bavaria, the original floodplains with their typical flora and fauna have long since disappeared. In the 1950s, hydraulic engineers did not even stop at existing nature reserves such as the famous Illas gorge near Roßhaupten: today it lies buried under the floods of Lake Forggen, which at the time was the largest reservoir in Germany.

However, some gems were able to escape the destructive rage: Prof. Dr. med. Otto Kraus and many conservationists ensured with their commitment that the Litzauer Lechschleife was rescued at Schongau and did not sink in a barrage.
