In the summer of 1991, a special structure was opened on the 61 m high hill Öskjuhlíð, combining the useful with the beautiful. In all weather conditions, the building surprises with the striking, glass dome called "The Pearl", with an interesting, widely visible play of colors.
The hill Öskjuhlíð is one of the highest points of the city and therefore very well suited to store the 85 ˚C hot, geothermal water that supplies the city of Reykjavík with energy. The six widely visible water tanks arranged in a circle can hold up to four million liters of water each.
