It is a Romanesque church that was mentioned in the Santa María del Puerto de Santoña Charter. It is believed to date from the late 12th century. Later the nave and the entrance door (16th century) and the tower (20th century) were built.
The apse, the presbytery, the pseudo cruise and the lantern are preserved in the Romanesque period. A pseudo cruise that, according to Campuzano and Zamanillo, "should be related to Mozarabic architecture".
The semicircular apse stands out from the outside. It is divided vertically by columns into three streets and horizontally by an impost with a double concave molding, the profile of which is a quarter circle called "Caveto". At the top, it is crowned by a cornice decorated with spheres and carried by sticks with various geometric and vegetable motifs as well as animals and people. In the central vertical body, a double window can be seen, which is separated by a column of three shafts and a single capital. It is covered with a dust cover with diamond tip decor. In the street of the south, to the left of the central one, there is a semicircular arch with another arch from the Baroque period with Herrerian spheres and a cross. The window on the opposite street in the north is a simple embrasure.
