The Ludwigsbrunnen is a memorial to the Bavarian King Ludwig I (1825 to 1848), who often visited Aschaffenburg. The fountain was ceremoniously unveiled in the open Schöntal on September 5, 1897 in the presence of Prince Regent Luitpold. The late classicist building consists of light gray granite in the substructure and in the surrounds of the basins and above it of Kehlheim limestone. The Hermenpfeiler is reminiscent of the Augustus statue at Primaporta. It is carved from Untersberg marble based on a bust of Ludwig I modeled by Ludwig Schwanthaler from life.

The top two gargoyles are shaped like ancient masks, while the lower ones are shaped as a tree frog, lizard, toad, and turtle. On the front, the allegories Bavaria and Historia are shown in relief and on the narrow sides fruit growing, shipping on the Main, trade and Spessart hunting. The architect is Paul Pfann, the sculptor Ernst Pfeifer, both from Munich. The fountain has been located on the Großmutterwiese since 1969.
