The Upper Flambacher Watercourse is one of the numerous historic water tunnels in the Upper Harz Mountains. It once served to supply power water to the artificial wheels of the mines west of Clausthal. Its construction enabled miners to replace a large section of the Upper Rosenhöfer Artificial Trench, which had previously performed this function.

The Upper Flambacher Watercourse was constructed between 1842 and 1844. This water tunnel passed under the Seidelskopf. The inlet opening is located below the Lower Flambacher Pond. After a short above-ground section, the outlet is joined by the Upper Johannisthal Watercourse, which in turn is followed by the (New) Upper Klein-Clausthal Watercourse. After this final tunnel, the water was transferred to the mines in the Rosenhöfer mining area.

At a length of 780 meters, the Upper Flambacher Watercourse has a height difference of 35 centimeters between the inlet and outlet. What may not seem like much here is still significantly more than the gradient in the Upper Rosenhöfer artificial ditch. Thus, the water not only flowed faster within the mountain, but it even warmed up slightly during the cold season.

Reducing the risk of freezing in the then very harsh winters was one of the main reasons for the construction of a water tunnel. Furthermore, the underground water pipe reduced operating costs and, by increasing the gradient, increased hydraulic pressure.
