The bridge was opened in 1927 as the "Hindenburg Bridge". The bridge was blown up in 1945, but opened again the following year - as the first road bridge over the Weser. Until the 1960s, the bridge was also used by the Extertaleisenbahn.

Opened to traffic in 1927, the arched bridge carried, among other things, the Extertal Railway through the city until the 1960s. In April 1945, before the invasion of American troops, it was demolished, but was rebuilt as the first road bridge over the Weser River in 1946. The late neoclassical sandstone obelisks date from a previous structure dating back to 1847.
