A small monument a few meters in front of the Elbe dike in Mühlberg reminds of the flood of the century ten years ago. “We were spared,” it is written in small letters.

The Elbe flood in Brandenburg in nine dates

- After heavy rains in the Elbe catchment area, the water masses also rose sharply in Brandenburg in August 2002

- In Mühlberg the water level reached 9.98 meters in the night of August 17th, the dike was completely softened

- Soldiers, firefighters and emergency services prevented the already evacuated city from being flooded

- later this was called the “miracle of Mühlberg”

- In the Prignitz, around 3000 people from 37 locations were asked to leave their villages as a precaution

- to relieve the dikes there, the Havel polder was flooded, causing the water level on the lower Elbe to sink

- The particularly endangered dike at the "Böse Ort" in the Prignitz was successfully defended by the emergency services

- Brandenburg's agriculture suffered tens of millions of euros in damage from the consequences of the flood

- By the end of 2002, an emergency aid program from the federal and state governments had approved 7.3 million euros for agricultural businesses
