The original Werfener Hütte is currently closed for comprehensive operation due to structural deterioration. However, the terrace, outdoor self-service for drinks (cash-only, trusted cash register), and toilets are still available for hikers. Plans for a new hut are underway, but its construction has faced delays.
A common ascent from the "Unterholz-Bauern" parking lot near Pfarrwerfen takes approximately 2.5 hours, covering about 870 meters in altitude. Another route from Wengerau (Werfenweng) via the Elmaualm takes around 2 hours and 45 minutes. These are generally considered intermediate hikes due to the sustained ascent.
The most common starting point with parking is the "Unterholz-Bauern" parking lot near Pfarrwerfen. It's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak season, as parking can fill up quickly.
Historically, the area around Werfener Hütte was accessible for skiing, tobogganing, and snowshoeing in winter. While the hut itself is not fully operational, the trails remain accessible for experienced winter hikers and snowshoers, provided conditions are safe. Be aware that the hut's facilities are limited in winter, and there was historically no running water.
Yes, dogs are generally welcome on the trails leading to Werfener Hütte. Historically, the hut allowed dogs by prior arrangement, with a cleaning fee, but they were only permitted to sleep in private rooms. Given the current limited operation, ensure your dog is well-behaved and kept on a leash, especially around other hikers.
While the hut's full services are paused, the area itself offers rewarding hikes for families with older children who are accustomed to mountain trails. Historically, the hut featured a climbing garden nearby and offered guided llama trekkings, which were popular with families. The stunning views are a great reward for a family effort.
From its elevated position, the Werfener Hütte terrace offers spectacular panoramic views. You can see across the Salzach valley, the impressive Hochkönig massif, and even the distant peaks of the Hohe Tauern mountain range. It's a highly rewarding spot for enjoying the alpine scenery.
Yes, Werfener Hütte is a popular stopover on numerous circular hiking trails within the Tennengebirge. Hikers can connect to other huts like Elmaualm, Edelweißerhütte, Mahdegg-Alm, Dr. Friedrich Oedl Haus, and Leopold Happisch Haus, allowing for multi-day or longer circular tours.
While not directly accessible by public transport, you can reach nearby towns like Pfarrwerfen or Werfenweng by public transport. From there, you would begin your hike. Be aware that an ascent from Werfen train station is very long, covering over 1,400 meters in altitude, and requires careful planning.
Historically, the Werfener Hütte was known for its unique blend of traditional Alpine hospitality and surprising features. It offered both regional Alpine dishes and Nepalese specialties, with its cooks reportedly being Sherpas. The hut also had resident llamas that roamed freely in summer and assisted with transporting supplies. A notable challenge was water scarcity, with guests sometimes encouraged to carry water canisters up.
The area around Werfener Hütte serves as an excellent base for various summit ascents. Popular peaks that can be reached within a few hours of hiking include the Werfener Hochthron, Streitmandl, and Raucheck. These offer more challenging options for experienced mountaineers.
