The Theresienmonument, the most important monument in the city of Bad Aibling, was unveiled on June 1, 1835. It was built in memory of Prince Otto's farewell from his mother, Queen Therese of Bavaria. The great European powers had agreed on Otto, the second son of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, born on June 1, 1815, when Greece, which had become independent of the Ottoman Empire after an uprising, was to have its own king. Ludwig I was a great admirer of Greek culture and was happy to see his son take over Greece. On December 6, 1832, Prince Otto, who was still a minor, said goodbye to the city of Munich, his father accompanied him to Ottobrunn, his mother and sister Mathilde to Aibling, the older brother Maximilian, who later became King Max I, to over the national border.

Erected to commemorate the farewell of Queen Therese of Bavaria to her seventeen-year-old son Otto, King of the new state of Greece, on December 6, 1832.
The foundation stone was laid on October 15, 1833, and unveiled on June 1, 1835.
The monument was designed by Georg Friedrich Ziebland. The 10-hundred-pound bronze statue of the Virgin Mary was cast by the royal foundry inspector Johann Baptist Stiglmaier, and the stonemasonry was executed by Hippolyt Hautmann from Echelsbach sandstone (height: 12 meters). The eight coats of arms symbolize the Bavarian administrative districts (at that time, the Palatinate still belonged to Bavaria).
