The church ceiling of St. Martin in Zillis is considered the oldest figuratively painted, almost completely preserved wooden ceiling of Western art, it dates from around 1110, ie from the High Romanesque period. It consists of 153 square panels (9 rows of 17 panels), each about 90 cm long. The pictures mainly tell stories from the New Testament and the life of St. Martin, framed by a frieze of mythical creatures and sea monsters.

In the church, you can borrow mirrors, so that you can study the impressive ceiling in peace without getting lost in the neck. Absolutely worth visiting!
