The church has a very inglorious history. In 1338 there had been anti-Jewish pogroms in Bavaria, including in Deggendorf. The church was built at this time as an anti-Jewish pilgrimage church. As early as the Enlightenment, there had been criticism of the cause and extent of the pilgrimage. It is almost unbelievable that this pilgrimage took place until March 1992. Only after a doctoral thesis by church historian Manfred Eder did the bishop of Regensburg decide to stop the pilgrimage.
