The shell limestone quarries (delicate pink rock) of La Couronne, located on the south-western tip of the La Nerthe peninsula, are very well known for supplying the builders in Marseille with stones in different periods.
Baou Tailla means something like "carved steep slope". The activity of the quarry workers has strongly influenced the landscape around the village of La Couronne, but also around the small port of Carro, from where the material was transported to Marseille, where works such as the Varian Charité or the town hall were built.
