The origins of the Worpswede Kunsthalle date back to the early days of the artists' colony. At that time, the bookbinder Friedrich Netzel made his premises available to young artists for sales exhibitions. In addition, the Netzel family started early to create a collection of works by the founding generation of Worpswede, which was later expanded. It is still the basis of a traditional connection between art trade and museum operations, for which Netzel's son Friedrich had the house built at the current location. As part of changing special exhibitions, works from the first-class collection to contemporary art are presented in the Worpswede Kunsthalle today.
