On the Steininger Berg (855 m), the highest point in the community of Schönau, there is a legendary rock, the seat of God. The summit cross is easy to climb for those with average experience using a tether. In the seat-shaped hollow on its top, God is said to have rested and looked at the hill country of Mühlviertel with a gentle smile, after he had created it so charming and loving. At the time of the Counter-Reformation, secret gatherings and celebrations of the Protestants are said to have taken place here. In the immediate vicinity is the summit of the Steininger Berg and east of it you have a wonderful view over Schönau and the Ruttenstein ruins. You can return to the village via the "Stoaninger Alm" with its speed slide and snack station.
